NOTE FROM THE COMPOSER
Michelangelo (di Ludovico Buonarroti) is best known for painting (e.g., Sistine Chapel), architecture (e.g., dome of St. Peter’s Basilica), and sculpture (e.g. The David). What is less known is that Michelangelo was a leading literary figure in Florence as well. He wrote over 300 sonnets and madrigals for starters. It is difficult to imagine that one individual had/has such a dominant influence over so many disciplines. Even to this day – 500 years later – Michelangelo is a household name. The second portion of text in O NOTTE is by Friedrich Rückert (1788-1866) – “You are harmony and rest…you are yearning and its cadence.”
